Because Ixtapa is effectively an encapsulated tourist cocoon, we have not been able to do serious grocery shopping until today when Jack, Linda, Carol and I rode by taxi to Zihuatanejo, a city fifteen minutes away. Jack and Linda have been here before and know where to go. So we arrived at a supermarket that sells it all: food, clothing, furniture, tires, the works. I like peanut butter but it's hard to come by here. This store had a few jars about half the size of a Coke can so at least I don't have to face a total peanut butter blackout. And it's made by Smuckers so it's got to be good.
We were glad the store was open despite it being a national holiday here today, Constitution Day. There are reportedly many holidays here, the next festivities being Valentine's Day on the 14th, Army's Day on the 19th, and Flag Day on the 24th.
Moving along ... the photo below is the view from our little balcony:
We have yet to sit by the pool. Probably tomorrow. Inside, our digs are good and roomy. Our bedroom has a mezzanine furnished with a sofa. One gets to this area by climbing a pipe ladder attached to the wall which goes up through a hole to the upper level. From there one wriggles one's way onto the mezzanine floor. Despite my long interest in architecture I do not feel strongly motivated to manoeuvre myself onto that floor to lounge in that sofa. One slip up and I'd be lounging in a Mexican hospital instead. Although I do understand the hospitals here are quite good.
